In spite of all the technical differences of the various members in the CICS family there is a common foundation that allows to create portable applications - the CICS API (Application Programming Interface). This application programming interface, though, makes it necessary to design the online applications in a vastly different way than it would be done in a batch environment. Finally, certain functions and facilities are available in CICS which are not provided in any other programming environment. The requirements and restrictions and the functions and facilities of online programming for CICS are the topics of the newly created course
