I worked with DOS/VSE, VM/370 and MVS back in the 80's. I work with UNIX now and haven't touched a mainframe in years. This site is a treasure trove of memories for me.

I started my career in computers in 1969 on an IBM 360/30 with 32KB that was still emulating an IBM 1440! I moved from trainee operator to senior operator/shift leader, COBOL maintenance programmer, programmer/analyst, system programmer. I was responsible (single-handedly!) for migrating from DOS->DOS/POWER->OS/MFT with HASP and finally OS/VS1 with JES1 on a 370/145 with 512KB of memory!
In 1978, with nowhere else to progress to in my place of work, I switched from IBM to ICL. This job lasted till the end of 1984 when I started my own company focusing on OpenVME support.
In 1996, with the threat of my becoming a "dinosaur" looming, I looked at the options for myself. It was very clear to me that I would have to retrain my self in the new [emerging] technologies if I wanted to remain competitive. I realised then that, whatever technology was available at the time, there was no way that I would be able to run my installation as I did on the mainframe.
So I started designing and writing a mainframe ENVIRONMENT ON A PC - [the equivalents of] JCL, TSO, BATCH, SPOOLER, CONSOLE, etc. Today EBE Computing can run any OpenVME mainframe workload VIRTUALLY UNCHANGED on a Linux, Aix or Windows machine. The throughput on the migrated environment is phenomenal!
In a nutshell EBE Computing provide a Windows application, OpenSCL, to run a mainframe environment, modeled on OpenVME, on a modern-day server running Windows, Linux or AIX.
OpenSCL runs on, from a laptop up to very advanced servers, with equal ease - and it can make use of the processors of other machines accessible to it on a network.
I will be more than happy to discuss what we did with anybody who will listen ...

Hello,
I am new to historical computer simulations and emulators, but I am pleased that there are people trying to revive these systems! Currently, I have a Hewlett-Packard HP-2000E Time-Shared BASIC emulator running on an old Dell Precision 410 under Windows 2000 Advanced Server and I am impressed with its authenticity and stability. Since it has Ethernet support, with WinCap 4.0.2 I can connect a "remote" terminal to it by opening telnet on another machine on the LAN by using the "OPEN" command with the hostname and port arguments. Running this simulation brings me back to my high school days.
Twenty five years ago I had a job as a computer operator on a IBM System 370/125 DOS/VS POWER/VS Release 34 system. God, how much I would like to run a similation of this system!
For now, I will start out tinkering with this MVS 3.8J you have and see if I can implement it on one of my PCs (they all run Windows 2000, either Professional or Advanced Server).
I really hope to hear from someone from this group as I will most likely need advice and help with this and locating a DOS/VS image to run with Hercules 3.0.5.
I am grateful that a group of IBM-saavy enthusiasts exists and hope to hear from you very soon! :)

Had a bit of trouble trying to install an old copy of the CD, will be downloading a new copy soon and am looking forward to installing MVS.
I never had any exposure to OS in school and MVS hadn't been developed yet. My only exposure to VM was at Credit Systems in '79. It's been a real struggle but I'm trying to relearn assembler and hope to develope some non-trival programs later on, using Music and 390sim.
Thanks for all the work that's gone into the MVS Turnkey!

Hercules and MVS 3.8 is a milestone that for the first time in history allows we mainframe developers to write code and own the code that we write. Thank you so much for that.
As to CICS, RACF and DB2? Well, I guess we'll just have to write the code ourselves. I volunteer to write SDSF. Give me a few months and you can add my code to this wonderful starter system.

Blob's law: The faster and the cheaper the hardware, the slower and bulkier the code. I remember how fast the FLIST facility was for CMS compared to Windows painfully slow ability to search for files and to display the contents of a folder. Won't the need for energy conservation rekindle an interest in efficiently sharing a blazingly fast mainframe? I would think the time saved from individuals having to continually re-install Windows would dramatically improve the world economic productivity:--) I am a VM fan, but I am going to try the MVS Tur(n)key system because the VM systems seems to leave a BM on my computer.

It's time to sign the guestbook. I've just installed the MVS Tur(n)key System in Windows Vista. There were a few small bumps in the road, but I have to congratulate you on having written such a fine set of documenation, and provided a bug-free setup utility! The workarounds for Windows Vista are listed on my blog at http://flatrivercobol.blogspot.com/2007/07/turnkey-mvs-for-windows-and-linux.html.

Can hardly wait for Tur(n)key #4. How about releasing what you have now and then come out with 4.1? Would love to have some 2305 and 2311 DRUM devices genned, too.

I have absolutely no mainframe experience whatsoever, although some 15y ago I did a tiny bit of work on S/36 and AS/400. I'm hoping to get a mainframe running on my PC thanks to your code, so I thank-you in advance!

Hi,
After reading the JCL minicourse for Hercules user , I really wished you wrote such courses for Cobol, CICS and other mainframe tech . Then I saw the course details and fee in Euro...which is very very expensive to my standards.
But your method and detail are definite invaluable. Thanks a lot for that.
Also can you please mention where I can get nice/ easily understandable material for CICS .
Youor help will be deeply appreciated.

The Volker Turnkey really is a solid piece of work. It definitely helps to get a feel for what a reasonably configured system looks like if you have the opportunity to see one first, rather than finding out the hard way via trial and error. My background is very Unix, but I am very glad now that I can actually communicate in the same language when my projects happen to interface with a mainframe shop. Keep up the excellent work, this Turkey's reputation is well-deserved.

Hi ! Previously I have messed around with Volker's and other distributions of MVS (never MVT). But your system got me going fast !! with lots of TSO utilities. I'm still learning about the nuts and bolts of mainframe, but this is the first chance I got to IPL my own machine and watch the messages flying past. Wish I had VS COBOL on it though. I studied ALGOL in school (the mother of all languages - even C language is derived from it) and would love to try it out on this system. By the way, Congragulations for giving a system with a Faultless install, with lots and lots of goodies on the DASD. Could you tell me how to switch off the autopilot ? I did P BSPPILOT, but then it restarts next time. Would like to customize some settings like making JES2 start COLD, and format spool etc.
Does anyone know of any old version of ISPF which we can use, and perhaps a C compiler for Mainframe ?
Ever Hopeful,
My best wishes to THE MVS TK COMMUNITY for a great job
well done, for allowing us to play with one hell of a classic system.

I studied on IBM 360/370 in college about 20 years ago, and thought I'd try it out.

What can I say, but Wonderful. Very close to what we have at work. I am no mainframe guru (trying to learn hence me installing the Tur(n)key system) but everything down to the RPF Console is very close. Wonderful system, easy setup, and pretty much flawless startup. I am running this on Linux and when coupled with a stable system like that, I expect great things out of it. Now the learning starts :)

Would like to see the interface code from HERCGUI to hercules. Thinking of writing interface from MVS3.8 to hercules for external processing of remote PC files.
Is it documented anywhere how to switch from MVS native hercules mode to a PC APP?
Could be a reserved user SVC# to switch to PC mode?

It's been a long time coming, I'm still at this Systems Programming business 35 years later....now z/OS that almost installs itself. I am looking forward to playing with the good old operating systems environment (another acronym? goose..) and see if my assembler/machine code skills can be found somewhere in that gray matter!
